The Division of Water Pollution Control develops and implements programs to prevent or clean up the pollution of surface and ground water in Massachusetts. Programs are also implemented at the local level under regional offices of the Department of Environmental Protection by the various regional engineers for resource protection. This series was created by regional office staff to review proposed local sewer extensions and to enforce water regulations upon municipalities in the course of analysing applications for permits to be granted by the division, pursuant to MGLA c 21, s 43. Once permits have been granted, the regional office undertakes no further action on the case.
